SPORTSDESK – Nick Malovhr hit seven three pointers on his way to a game high 23 points and led the Dons past the Royals at Wisconsin Rapids Lincoln high school. With second leading scorer Jarred Mandel often on the bench during the game in foul trouble, the Dons got a boost from fellow junior, Ethan Meece. Meece contributed 10 points and two key baskets while being fouled in the second half to help push the Dons over the top, 63-53.
The Dons, who held a 24-23 lead at halftime, went on a 9-2 run to start the second half and never trailed in the second half.
Meece scored five of the Dons nine during that stretch including a tough shot over 6’5” Royal senior, Joe Grundhoffer, that resulted in a foul and made free throw. The Royals brought the Don lead down to two, 34-36 with ten minutes left in the game as senior, Jacob Sullivan, began to heat up. Then after a Noah Hansen basket it was Nick Malovhr time. Malovhr hit three consecutive long balls for the Dons and in less than 2 minutes time, solely delivered by Malovhr, Columbus was up 45-36 with five minutes left and never looked back.
The Dons had four total in double figure scoring, Malovhr (23), Hanson (12), Noah Taylor (11) and Meece (10). They will again likely need that kind of balanced scoring as they meet Green Bay NEW Lutheran on Saturday at 1pm in Antigo. Green Bay defeated Phelps, 78-76, in their sectional semi final yesterday. Samuel Meerstein had 30 in the game, while Lucas Bukowski chipped in 24.
Meerstein, a junior and 1st team Packerland conference selection for the Blazers, averages over 21 points per game and will likely be the Dons main focus on Saturday.
