SPORTSDESK – The girls softball team from Spencer high school are on a sight seeing trip through the state of Wisconsin this month. Their journey began on May 23rd in Spencer with picturesque views of red barns and dairy farms in central Wisconsin. Then on May 25th, the girls visited the “River Bluff Capital of the World” in Fountain City, WI. After a Memorial Day weekend of rest and remembrance, the team visited southwest Wisconsin, taking in beautiful views of Lake Onalaska and the city of La Crosse. What’s next for these girls? A trip to green bean territory in Markesan, WI will take place on May 31st. Rolling fields of green beans, potatoes and other crops as far as they eye can see.
Not exciting enough for you? It is if I told you that during these scenic day trips, the girls have also stormed their way thru the 2018 WIAA Division 4 softball tournament. These Rockets from Spencer harvested the Bangor Blackhawks 3-0, they viewed the bluffs and sent the Cochrane-Fountain City Pirates down the river 3-2 and tossed the Luther Knights playoff hopes in Lake Onalaska, 5-4.
Their latest victory over Luther puts the Rockets in a sectional finals match-up against the Pacelli Cardinals. The Cardinals have 10 run-ruled all three of their playoff opponents thus far, each game only lasting five innings. Rockets worried? “We are really hitting our stride. Coach Wilke and I couldn’t prouder”, head coach Laschel Canfield.
Winner of Thursday’s game gets a trip to Madison, WI. East Wash, Lakes Mendota and Menona, the University of Wisconsin, the state capitol and of course – Goodman Diamond, home of the state tournament. A sightseer’s destination!
